STEWARDSHIP

Antimicrobial Stewardship
Our laboratory recognizes the potential impacts of antimicrobial resistance on the healthcare system and we have worked diligently to prioritize antimicrobial stewardship. Our lab has been trusted by providers nationwide who have been successful in upholding the value of antimicrobial stewardship, trending improved patient outcomes, and prescribing antimicrobial treatment with utmost confidence. As one of the essential steps in reducing antimicrobial resistance includes performing appropriate diagnostic tests to guide antimicrobial therapy, our lab has designed the most comprehensive, informative, and accurate testing methods to date.
What is Antimicrobial Stewardship?
Antimicrobial stewardship is the coordinated effort to optimize the use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents. This means prescribing the right drug, at the right dose, for the right duration, based on evidence-driven guidelines. Stewardship helps combat antibiotic resistance, reduces healthcare costs, and improves patient outcomes (CDC).

$55 billion
Antibiotic-resistant infections add an estimated $20 billion annually in direct healthcare costs in the United States, with additional productivity losses of up to $35 billion (CDC).

$1,800
Patients with antibiotic-resistant infections typically incur $1,400 to $2,200 more in healthcare costs per hospital stay compared to those with non-resistant infections (CDC).

In Our Antibiotic Era
In a time where antimicrobial resistance threatens the effectiveness of life-saving therapy options, antimicrobial stewardship is a crucial initiative to prioritize. At Promus Diagnostics, we are committed to being a leader in antimicrobial stewardship by offering diagnostics and strategies that empower both patients and providers to make informed, responsible decisions.

Antibiotics
Antibiotics are drugs specifically designed to target bacterial infections. They work by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, they are ineffective against viruses, fungi, and other non-bacterial pathogens.

Antivirals
Antivirals are medications used to treat viral infections by inhibiting the virus’s ability to replicate in the body. Unlike antibiotics, they are tailored to combat specific viruses, such as those causing influenza, HIV, and herpes.

Antifungals
Antifungals treat fungal infections, ranging from mild skin conditions like athlete’s foot to more serious infections like fungal pneumonia. These medications either kill fungal cells or prevent them from multiplying.

Antimicrobials
Antimicrobials encompass a broad category of agents that act against a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals are all types of antimicrobials.
We're Focused on Stewardship
We are committed to antimicrobial stewardship in order to combat the growing concern of antibiotic resistance.
Antimicrobial resistance leads to increased frequency and length of hospitalizations, morbidity, and mortality.
Safeguarding the Future

Advanced Diagnostic Testing for Precision Care
Our lab offers sophisticated molecular diagnostics that go beyond standard PCR tests. We identify over 100 pathogen targets and resistance genes with high accuracy, providing detailed results in colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL). This precision allows healthcare providers to prescribe treatments that are tailored, reducing unnecessary antibiotic use and lowering the risk of resistance (Joint Commission).

Evidence-Based Treatment Recommendations
We provide customized treatment maps that are based on our comprehensive test results. By aligning with CDC and WHO guidelines, we support prescribers in selecting the most appropriate therapies for each patient’s specific infection, helping to prevent the misuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics and ensuring better clinical outcomes (CDC; WHO).

Rapid Reporting and Actionable Insights
We understand the importance of timely decision-making in patient care. Our lab offers next-day turnaround on results, which includes not only the identification of pathogens but also a breakdown of relevant resistance markers. This ensures that patients receive the right treatment without delays, supporting the principles of antimicrobial stewardship (Joint Commission).

Resistance Genes
Resistance genes are found as a component of the genetic material within bacteria. Many different resistance genes exist. Resistance genes allow bacteria to defeat antibiotics.
Antibiotic Resistance
The presence of resistance genes may render certain antibiotics ineffective. The process of bacteria demonstrating resistance to an antibiotic is known as antibiotic resistance.
Antibiotic Stewardship
Efforts to address antibiotic resistance and prevent the overuse or misuse of antibiotics is known as antibiotic stewardship.
